Our Side of the Mountain

My Side of the Mountain is a fictional novel written for young adults by Jean Craighead George in 1959.  In it 12 year old, Sam Gribley runs away from his home in New York City to the Catskill Mountain's and live in the wilderness.  Sam makes a home out of a hollowed out tree, forages for roots and berries, hunts game, and even tames a peregrine falcon named Frightful.  Throughout the book he learns what resources are available to him and how to make the best of them.  Through great perseverance he learns not only to survive but also to thrive on his side of the mountain.

Much like Sam Gribley, we are not only looking to survive but also should be learning to thrive in our world.  To do this we need to seek out what resources are available and learn how to make the best of them.  Unlike Sam, none of us are alone in this endeavor.  Together we can make Our Side of the Mountain a place that contains an abundance of everything we need to survive.

“Be you writer or reader, it is very pleasant to run away in a book.”
